Windows 11 Settings app gets new Home, Presence sensing, VHD manager

  • Microsoft is working on several new improvements for the Settings app.
  • These features include a new Home page for the app.
  • Settings to create and manage virtual drives from Disks & volumes.
  • In addition, there s a new Presence sensing and Keyboard pages

A new Home page, the ability to create and manage Virtual Hard Disks (VHDs), and a new presence detecting page are among the enhancements and new features Microsoft is working on for the Windows 11 Settings app.

Windows 11 build 25300 conceals at least three enhancements coming to the Settings app, in addition to the new End Task option coming to the Taskbar JumpList and the UX enhancements for the Snap Layouts flyout.

A Homepage will be included in the Settings app and is anticipated to be the first page that appears when the app is opened, per a few tweets from @thebookisclosed. The most recent Windows 11 preview already shows the settings page, but it lacks all of the components that are typically found on this page.

Microsoft is also developing a new interface for creating and managing VHDs on the Disks & Volumes page. A wizard for creating a VHD or VHDX with a fixed size or dynamic expansion will appear during the experience, along with the choice to build an MBR (Master Boot Record) or GPT (GUID Partition Table) partition.

You can already build a virtual drive using PowerShell or the Computer Management program, but now you can do it via the Settings app as well.

The Settings app is also getting a new Presence sensing page in the Privacy & Security area. This page adds a number of new settings, such as Recent activity, Let apps access Presence sensing, Let desktop apps access Presence sensing, and Presence sensing access.

Presence sensing appears to be a phrase used to describe capabilities that use the device’s sensors to assess whether you are close to the device. These new options will let you choose whether or not apps can use the sensors to find you.

Lastly, the Typing settings page is now called Keyboard in the Time & Language area. It combines the current Typing settings with the possibility to change the default keyboard and add new keyboard languages.

These settings are experimental, so it’s unknown when or if they will ever be available in a future Windows version or feature update, even though they are presently there in the Settings app.
