UPDATED 4/4/2023: The Split window functionality may now be enabled in preview mode on Microsoft Edge (through Reddit). Here’s how to enable it in the stable version of Windows 11’s default browser.

As the name suggests, the new Split window feature that Microsoft is developing for Edge lets you compare pages side by side by displaying two tabs in the same window. It functions similarly to Windows 11’s Snap Assist feature, except this one makes splitting the screen to view and compare web sites a little simpler.

A new Split window button will show up next to the address bar after you enable the option. You can choose another page to split the screen after clicking the button, which will split the page you are currently viewing.

To inform you of the page that is currently under focus, the function also modifies the tab graphics. When in split mode, you can close the current page, open the page in a new tab, move between linked and unlinked tabs, and access some additional options in the top-right corner of the page. Additionally, you can drag the gripper to the middle left or right to resize the tabs.

This tutorial will show you how to activate the tab split screen feature in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11.

Enable split screen feature on Microsoft Edge

Follow these steps to enable split screen in Microsoft Edge:

Microsoft Edge is open.

In the address bar, type the path below and hit Enter:

Choose the Enabled option from the Microsoft Edge Split screen drop-down menu on the right.

Microsoft Edge enable split screen feature

To restart, click the button.

After completing the instructions, choose the second web page to see side-by-side by clicking the Split window button.

Once the experimental flag has been enabled, you may choose which buttons to display on the toolbar area of the edge://settings/appearancesettings page to enable or disable the feature.

Update April 4, 2023: The stable channel (version 111) now offers the option to enable the feature, which was previously limited to the Beta, Dev, and Canary Channels.
