- Microsoft is working on a Depth Effects feature for Windows 11.
- The feature will add a parallax effect to background images as you move the mouse around.
- It s unclear when the feature will be available, but it may be included on Windows 11 23H2.
You can set a desktop background image with depth effects in Windows 11. The capability was previously present in operating system preview builds, but it was ineffective. With build 23466, however, this is no longer the case, as Twitter user Albacore was able to activate the feature.
A new feature called Depth Effects employs artificial intelligence (AI) to give wallpapers a parallax effect. This means that when you move the mouse pointer across the screen, you will see many backdrop layers that move at varying rates to provide the impression of depth.
To activate the new feature, turn on the Depth Effects toggle switch. It will show up under Settings>Personalization>Background. However, some backdrop photos will be able to use the parallax technique, as the page explains the capability.
Normally, preview copies of Windows 11 allow you to enable a hidden feature, but this specific feature isn’t yet ready, so there’s no simple way to test it out.
When users will be able to access it is unknown. Nevertheless, given that the Depth Effects feature has been observed on the Dev Channel, it is probable that this will be included in the upcoming release of Windows 11 23H2.
