The 2024-P Zitkala-Ša American Women Quarter was released on October 21, 2024, marking the 15th coin in the American Women Quarters series and the fifth coin in the program’s third year. The series, authorized in 2022, honors women who have made a lasting impact on history and culture.

Availability and Ordering:

This new quarter is gradually entering circulation, available through banks and the U.S. Mint. Collectors can order rolls and bags directly from the Mint starting October 28. For avid collectors, limited product options include:

  • 100-coin bags: Limited to 8,250 bags, with an initial limit of 10 bags per household.
  • Two-roll set (Philadelphia and Denver): Limited to 6,000 sets, with an initial household limit of three.
  • Three-roll set (Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco): Limited to 16,625 sets, with a household limit of three.

About Zitkala-Ša

Zitkala-Ša, whose name means “Red Bird,” was a Lakota Sioux writer, musician, and advocate for Native American rights. Born in 1876 on the Yankton reservation, she shared the stories of her people through books and music, writing the first Native American opera, The Sun Dance Opera, in 1913. Her life was dedicated to promoting Native American culture and fighting for civil rights.

Quarter Design

The obverse (front) of this quarter shows a design of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser, used specifically for the American Women Quarters Program. The reverse (back) design, by Don Everhart, features Zitkala-Ša dressed in traditional Sioux attire, holding a book, with a cardinal flying in the background to symbolize her Lakota name, “Red Bird.”

Collectors can admire these unique designs, symbolizing Zitkala-Ša’s legacy and the spirit of Native American culture.
